Phonics

At Hillside we follow 'Letters and Sounds' which  is a phonics resource published by the Department for Education and Skills in 2007. It aims to build children's speaking and listening skills in their own right as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills. It sets out a detailed and systematic programme for teaching phonic skills for children starting by the age of five, with the aim of them becoming fluent readers by age seven.

Phonics is taught in phases and it has five phases starting with Phase 1 in Nursery, Phase 2 in Reception and completing phase 3 and 4, starting phase 4 and 5 in Year 1 and continuing with phase 6 in Year 2.

Early Years Phonics Workshop for parents/carers

Thank you for attending the workshop and leaving such positive feedback. We are pleased to know that you found it enjoyable, informative and educational; and had opportunities to discuss and explore phonics teaching and learning.

Phoneme pronunciation is key to accurate blending. It is 'ssssss' not 'suh'. We want a pure sound, without the 'uh' at the end. Hear how to blend the phonemes ... Parents in our workshop found it really useful to learn to say the pure sounds.
