Whales

Whales is one of our Year 5 classes. Mr Nunns is the class teacher, supported by Mrs Dziopa.

The morning session starts at 9.00 am until 12.30pm, although Mr Nunns encourages the children to arrive on time (8.50am) so that they can get themselves organised with their reading records and morning maths work. The afternoon session runs from 1.15pm until 3.15pm.

In a morning, the children are taught Reading, followed by Maths. After assembly and a short break they do Spelling and English. During these sessions, the children can work either as a whole class, in small groups or 1-1 with an adult.

During the afternoon session, the children undertake topic related work which covers subjects such as History, Geography, Science, Art, Music, PSHE, RE and PE. These topics change either on a half termly basis. Additionally all children having French and Swimming lessons.

The children go swimming on a Wednesday afternoon. They require a swimming kit on this day, including a towel and swimming cap. PE is taught on a Monday afternoon. All children require a PE kit including pumps or trainers on this day.

Whales have a weekly library session on a Tuesday. The children can use this session to change their books or research information about their topic.

Homework is given out in homework books on a Friday and should be returned by the following Monday. Homework includes spelling (and children will be tested on a Friday), English and Maths. Homework club is on a Tuesday if children require additional support or have no brought in their homework.

Reading is expected to take place each night and Mr Nunns encourages parents to be involved in this routine as much as possible. Whales class are expected to fill in their reading recording with the: date, title of the book, pages read and a comment, this helps the children to reflect on what they have read and make it more meaningful. Pupils and parents can decide whether they the reading record stays in school or is to be taken home but it must return each morning.

The children in Whales class have regular educational visits which may vary according to the topic being studied.
